Aunt Junie
Hello Flower series is inspired by my sweet English friend, Stacey-as, “Hello Flower” is how she greets me every single time she sees me-it always warms the cockles of my heart! I LOVE flowers! I wear them in my hair, have a bouquet on my kitchen table every week from my amazing husband and draw them every chance I get!
When I dreamed up this printable concept, I envisioned my artwork traveling all over the world.
SO…
Meet my Aunt Junie. Aunt Junie was a beauty, with the prettiest gingerbread colored skin, smooth and soft. Aunt Junie was another of my great aunts, my father’s aunt. Aunt Junie was also born and raised on Sugar Island, in the community of Payment, surrounded by family and the most beautiful setting you ever laid eyes on. I LOVED visiting her home as a child and as a adult. As a child because I was surrounded by my cousins, who were all older and high on the cool registry in my eyes. As an adult, I could listen to her tell family stories for hours, often prompting her by asking about a certain relative or special event. Aunt Junie was a proud member of the Sault Ste Marie tribe of Chippewa Indians, she worked for the betterment of her people in the tribal enrollment office. There is a lovely portrait of my Aunt Junie as a tribal elder in the Niigaanagiizhik Ceremonial building.
I miss my Aunt Junie tremendously, but she is part of me, so she is never too far away.
